Kelly Ash: Teaching
Private Lessons
I teach private lessons in voice, piano, and musicianship (which can include: songwriting, composition, theory, improvisation, etc.) All levels. My students range widely in style and age, and I strive to create a custom-built lesson plan to cover whatever the student would like to learn or work on. Some students work on songwriting, some study both piano and voice, some are learning to read music and improve knowledge of theory, and others just want to have fun singing.
- Voice lessons (all levels, any genre): we will work on developing repertoire, musicianship, styles, phrasing, "finding your voice", and strengthening vocal technique and production.
- Piano lessons (beginning to intermediate): basic technique on the instrument, reading music, or jazz piano.
- Musicianship (all levels, any genre): songwriting and crafting process, basic theory and patterns within music, reading music, improvisation, advanced theory, transcription, rhythmic development, etc.
Lessons are $50/ hr. or $25/ half hour
Vocal Performance/ Songwriting Workshops
The purpose of this six-week course (which meets once weekly for two hours) is to help vocalists develop their technique and musicianship, learn to work with and communicate with a band, experiment and expand songwriting ideas, and learn to develop/ arrange tunes to perform in a final showcase. All levels and all styles of music welcome! Whether you want to write songs, bring in jazz standards or covers, or let us help you find songs to work on, we will make it work! We will have a band (piano, guitar, bass and drums) during classes, and class size will be limited (10 students max) to allow sufficient time for each vocalist to work with the band. We will provide reference CDs and handouts with exercises, assignment ideas, and technical notes. The workshop will culminate in a final performance/ showcase in which the singers will perform their songs for friends and family at a local Seattle club.
Topics will include:
- working with a band and real-time communication
- musicianship and styles/ genres
- developing strong vocal technique
- creating a unique sound and style
- songwriting
- improvisation, rhythm and themes
- analytical listening skills
- patterns within music (basic theory)
- lyrical development
- arranging with a band
- developing songs to perform with a band
- ....and many more!
